Roguelike games are not for everyone as they lack all the pretty graphics that many people think are absolutely necessary for a good game. However, roguelike games have very deep gameplay hidden behind their text "graphics." Incursion is a new roguelike game of the standard fantasy dungeon hack-and-slash fest variety. Its claim to fame is that it uses the same basic character generation, magic, and combat rules that "Open Game License" tabletop roleplaying games like Dungeons and Dragons 3.x use.
Incursion: Halls of the Goblin King is a small roguelike game with only ten levels of randomly generated dungeon to explore, but the current game is just a development version of what will become a game with many dungeons and a large world to explore. You invest a lot of time in developing a character for Incursion. In fact, you invest so much time that the game has a "reincarnation" system where, if a character is killed before reaching 5th level, you can elect to reincarnate the character instead of taking the time to generate a new one.
I just started playing Incursion and it has a very different feel than most of the roguelike games I've played. Your character's individual abilities really do matter. Unless you absolutely hate roguelike games, you might want to give Incursion a try.
