Free Flash Video (FLV) to AVI/MPEG/WMA Converter (Discovery)

Flash Video has become very common on the Internet with popular sites like YouTube using for all their videos. Unfortunately, if you download a Flash Video, you will discover that they are very hard to play on your PC as most video players do not play Flash Video. This freeware program will convert Flash Video files to AVI, MPEG, or WMV video files which can be played in Windows Media Player and other video players.

Tunestor -- Down Music from Internet to IPod in Just Two Clicks (Discovery)

I don't have an Ipod, but Tunstor looks like a great program for those who do. It lets you right click on an mp3 file download link on the web, select "Download Directly to iTunes" and Tunestor automates everything: "it automatically downloads the file to its music folder and adds it to the Tunestor playlist in iTunes. When you connect your iPod to your computer, all the music downloaded in this playlist will automatically get copied to your iPod!" This sounds like it would be a lot faster than manually downloading a file to a folder and then adding it to iTunes.

Ashampoo ClipFinder -- Find and Download Onlive Video

Ashampoo ClipFinder is a freeware program that lets you search online video portals like Youtube by keywords and view and/or download the videos it finds. Most programs for video downloading are browser addins that allow you to try to save the video playing on a page you are viewing. ClipFinder takes a different approach. It searches video sites for videos managing a search term and allows you to view and/or download one or more of the videos it finds.

FairUse4WM Updated!

This thread on the Doom9 Forum is reporting that Fairuse4WM, a program that removes copy protection from purchased Windows Media files so they can be used on devices not approved my Microsoft, has been updated to work with Microsoft DRM up to version 11.0.6000.6324. While Microsoft apparently hates this program and it probably violates the DCMA, it restores ones ability to use one's music on the player of one's choice.

IndieVolume -- Per Application Volume Control

One of the nicer features of Windows Vista is independent volume control for every application. IndieVolume brings this feature to Windows XP (also ME, 2000, and 2003) -- and apparently has done so for several years. This program is payware, unlike most of the programs I review, but it provides a unique feature that I haven't seen in any freeware application.

JLC's Internet TV (Discovery)

Jlc's Internet TV has just reached version 1.0 final. It is a freeware program for finding and watching Internet TV channels. The program automatically finds over 1400 Internet TV channels. It has the following major features:

* Watch over 1400 online TV channels for free!
* User friendly interface with inbuilt channel list.
* Channel updater which keeps your list synchronized with the list at World Wide Internet TV
* Program updater automatically keeps your program up to date.
* Powerful search function lets you easily find any channel.

Avidemux Video Editor (Discovery)

My idea of video is watching a DVD, but if you make your own videos and are looking for a simple but functional video editor, you might want to give Avidemux a try. I saw someone on a forum (unrelated to video) say it was "basic, but simple to use -- and free" when someone new to video editing was asking about editing programs.

FreeGuide -- TV Listings Browser (Discovery)

FreeGuide is a TV guide program listing program. It extracts TV information from web pages and stores them for viewing without the need to connect to the Internet. The viewer allows the user to view television listings and create customized TV guides by selecting programs and by building up a favorites list.

This program works with listings for Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan (Linux only), the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, the UK and the United States.

DVDFab Decrypter (Discovery)

I suspect this program is illegal in many countries -- those that have a law similiar to the draconian DMCA in the United States. However, if you are lucky enough to live in a country where buyers have more rights than sellers, this program may be able to help you make backup copies of your DVD movies or make copies that can be played on non-Windows operating systems.

YouTube Downloader [Discovery]

This single function program lets you plug in a youtube video url and it downloads the video to the folder of your choice in an .avi or .mpeg format that can be played in Windows Media Player. No need for a special player.

From the YouTube Downloader web site:

YouTube Downloader is a free tool that downloads videos from youtube and saves it as Avi file to your local computer. Simply paste the URL of a video into the program, press Start, and the AVI or MPEG file will be downloaded into the selected folder.
