My wife reformatted her Windows XP box yesterday due to various registry problems it had picked up over time. While downloading new copies of various freeware programs she uses, she stumbled across this nifty screensaver. My Pictures 3D Screensaver takes a directory of pictures on your hard drive and displays them on the walls of a 3D gallery. When the screensaver activates, it walks through the gallery displaying your pictures in a nifty 3D setting. It comes with two galleries and you can download others (although my wife has yet to figure out how to make downloaded galleries work).

Deep Paint 2.0 is an older version of Deep Paint 3D which Right Hemisphere USA has made available as freeware on Download.com. Deep Paint, like Corel Painter, is intended to allow an artist to paint on the monitor screen like they were painting on canvas. This program once sold for a few hundred dollars.

HeroQuest is a turn based computer game in a fantasy setting. It was inspired on MB's and Games Workshop's boardgame 'HeroQuest' and is a modern remake of the old DOS version of the boardgame published in the early 1990s, only for Windows and with better graphics. The game focuses on four different heroes working through various quests, encountering foes ranging from goblins to chaos warriors. You can play the original campaign, additional quests created by other players or take a single character into the self generating random dungeon.

I discovered Mapwing when a friend of mine used this online application to show pictures of her garden from a map of her backyard. It put everything in context quite nicely. If you have pictures that tell a story, you can use Mapwing to display those pictures in a way that tells that story.
From the Mapwing web site:

Urban Terror 4 is a "total conversion" for Quake 3 Arena. Unlike most First Person Shooter mods, Urban Terror does not require that you own a copy of the original Quake 3 Arena game to play. If you do not own a copy of of the commercial game, you can download ioUrbanTerror -- created from the open source version of the Quake 3 code. Downloading ioUrbanTerror only adds about 6 megs to the 550 meg Urban Terror 5 download.

While nothing can replace parental supervision, a filtering program can help prevent stumbling across content unsuitable for your child. You can pay money for a content filter and often have little control over what it filters -- some commercial filters protect from political and religious sites that upset their corporate leaders as well as from p*rn, for example.
FoxFilter is a free content filter extension for the Firefox browser that you control.

Don't you hate it when a nice freeware program decides not only to go commercial with new versions, but removes all the old freeware versions of the program from sites they control or influence in an attempt to make people use the new payware version? Sure, the newer versions generally have more features, but many times the old freeware version will do what you need with zero impact on your pocketbook -- if you could only find a copy.
