YouOS -- A Web Operating System

Posted on Monday, July 10, 2006 at 9:36 PM by Randall

There are a number of online services that will let you write a document or store a file or keep a to-do list. If you are a "road warrior," such sites can make it easy to work from any Internet connected computer you have access to. The only problem is each site is separate from the others. Need to include your todo list in a document? Visit two sites. YouOS takes a different approach. It's a "web operating system that lets you run diverse applications within a web browser." Simple applications sticky notes and clocks or complex applications like word processors, mp3 players, and instant messengers. You can even write your own applications in javascript. That's right, YouOS applications are coded in javascript.

YouOS is in alpha and is currently free. I've found it quite usable even in alpha and new features are being added constantly -- both by the developers and by users writting applications. YouOs isn't going to replace applications on your desktop or laptop, but it is a great one-stop supplement for them. Give it a try and you'll probably be as surprised as I was at how powerful and fast applications written in javascript and ran from an operating system on a server in your browser can be.

Rating: 4 Stars
