Gliffy -- Visio on the Web?

Posted on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 at 4:35 PM by Randall

I know I've said it before: Web 2.0 is a buzz word often associated with sites that are solutions in search of a problem (and often a funding source). Every once in a while, however, I stumble across a "Web 2.0" site that actually lives up to the name. Gliffy is one such site.

I occasionally have to produce a organization chart or other diagram. Visio is the the standard Windows program for diagramming, but it costs far too much for occasional use. There are open source diagramming programs, but they are non-standard and can make it hard to collaborate with others on a chart. Gliffy is a new site that provides a diagramming program that runs in your browser. It's beta and has a ghlitch or two, but generally works quite well. While only one person can work on a diagram at a time, the fact that it is web-based means that it is easy to pass it on to another for additional work.

From the Gliffy web site:

Gliffy is easy, free, and fun!

* Diagramming in your web browser without downloading additional software
* Similar to Visio, yet in your web browser
* Desktop application feel in a web-based diagramming solution
* Add collaborators to your work and watch it grow
* Link to published Gliffy drawings from your blog or wiki
* Create many types of diagrams:

o Flowcharts
o UI wireframes
o Floor plans
o Network diagrams
o Any simple drawing or diagram

Gliffy is currently free, however, a pay version with more features is planned. If you need an easy to use diagramming tool and don't want to spring for Visio, give Gliffy a try..

Rating: 4 Stars
Price: Free (Pay version planned)
