ERUNT - Backup and Restore Windows Registry
Posted on Thursday, April 13, 2006 at 9:45 PM by Randall
The Windows Registry was a good idea -- at least in theory. Collect all the data Windows 3.x and Windows 3.x programs would scatter around the hard drive in human-readable .ini files and store them in one massive, but efficient database. The only problem with this theory in practice was that if the Windows Registry becomes corrupted, you often have to reinstall Windows and all your programs to recover. Later versions of Windows added a restore feature that takes snapshots of the registry and allows you to restore them. Usually, this is enough, but ERUNT goes one step further and allows you to backup the entire regristry to a directory and restore it from that directory at any time. This allows you to store registry backups on CD-ROMs and DVDs if you wish.
The program is simple to use, but you really do need to read the readme file that comes with the program to use it effectively. For example, if you don't read the readme file, you'll may not be able to figure out how to restore a backup. (Hint: ERUNT puts a copy of the restore program in the directory with the backup of the registry so it is always handy.) This program may not be glamorous, but it really can save your bacon if you use it regularly. By the way, it's fast -- so you really have no excuse not to use it regularly.
