Karen's Replicator -- Backup Files on Demand

Posted on Monday, April 10, 2006 at 9:34 PM by Randall

Everyone knows backups are important, but most people aren't likely to do them more than once a day (and once a week is more likely -- even for someone who knows backups will save their hide). Many times it would be nice to create backup copies of just a few files or directories one another hard drive or even on the same hard drive -- not for use in case of hard drive failure, but for use in case of operator failure. How many times have you accidently deleted or changed a file you are working with and don't have time to recreate? Perhaps I'm not absentminded than most, but I do it all the time.

That's why I have a Powerpro script that makes an extra copy of my work directories at regular intervals. Writing a script, even a simple one, isn't something most people are going to do, however. That's why I suggest Karen's Replicator, a nifty freeware program made for duplicating a few files or directories. The description on the web site says it better than I could:

Automatically backup files, directories, even entire drives! Karen's Replicator copies selected files from one drive/folder to another. Source and Destination folders can reside anywhere on your network.

Options include repeated copies at intervals as short as a few minutes, or as long as several months, copy only files that have changed, and the replication of file deletions.

New features allow you to specify which files should not be copied, and also which days a file should be skipped!

It's easy to use and will save you headaches and frustration.
