Evil Player -- Tiny Media Player

Posted on Thursday, April 06, 2006 at 9:33 PM by Randall

In recent years, media player software has gotten larger and larger and filled with all sorts of bells and whistles that eat up system memory and cpu power. Many people like skins, music visualizations, and other bells and whistles. Other people simply want a media player t play music and otherwise stay out of the way. Evil Player will do that. It is a fast, small media player for Windows that just plays music without all the frills. Here is the description of Evil Player from its web site:

Evil Player is a fast, powerful and flexible media player for windows. Some of Evil Player's key features include Shoutcast, Icecast and Icecast2 support, low memory footprint and native support for several popular formats (MP3, MP2, MP1, OGG, AIFF and MOD). Features:

* Easy to use
* Small (less than 1MB!)
* Audio formats supported: WAV, OGG, MP1, MP2, MP3, MOD, XM, IT, S3M, MTM, UMX, MO3
* Supports BASS plug-ins
* Low memory footprint
* Radio streaming (SHOUTcast/ICEcast/ICEcast2)
* SHOUTcast recording
* Completely free

Evil Player does its job quite well. It isn't pretty to look at and it will not fill your screen with music visualizations, but it does play music while staying out of your -- and your system's -- way. While this is especially important on older computers, I was surprised to see a noticable improvement in my relatively new computer's performance on other tasks when playing mp3s via Evil Player as compared to playing mp3s with Winamp.
