Cathy -- Catalog Your Data CDs and DVDs

Posted on Thursday, February 16, 2006 at 10:26 PM by Randall

You downloaded a program a few months ago and know you backed it up to CD. Now you want to give a copy to a friend and can't remember where you found it on the Net, so you are loading up your recent backup CDs one by one and searching through them in Windows Explorer. Cathy, a tiny Windows program, will let you quickly catalog all those backup CDs. Then you can search the catalog on your hard drive instead of manually searching through all those backup CDs. I honestly do not know how I managed before I discovered this gem.

Here's the description from the author's home page:

An extremly small, very fast and easy to use media cataloging tool. You can use it to index files stored on removable media (CD-ROMs, LS120, Iomega Zip and Jaz disks, or even diskettes), hard disks or net drives, and create searchable catalogs that can be used without having access to original media. Searching capabilities are based on file name, date and size. Additional features include filtering options, search duplicates or singles, customizable date format, etc. Found files can be opened (executed) or deleted directly, if they are present. Drag&drop support. Directory trees, MP3 album/song lists can be printed, disk space usage can be investigated. Single file executable, no install needed.

That's right -- no install needed. Just download the program, unzip it, move it to a new, empty subdirectory and run it. It will store its catalog files in the subdirectory the program is in. The program is easy to figure out and use, but if you are the type of person who likes to read manuals, there is a manual available for download.
