VicMan’s DataBase — Freeware Database Program

There aren’t many freeware general purpose database programs. VicMan’s Database is one of the few I’ve discovered with any real power. Unfortunately, despite the claims of it’s author, it is not all that intuitive to use. Fortunately, the help file explains how to actually use the program, although it really assumes you know about databases.

From the program’s web site:

VCW VicMan’s DataBase is one of the best and the most popular database management programs. The simple interface is oriented to user of ANY skill level. It supports all file formats, text fields, lists, flags, pictures, text, date fields, integer fields etc. You can make unlimited number of DBs with the custom structure. It has a lot of powerful features, such as advanced searching, sorting, replacement, tree view, file types changing, filters and macros. Supports VBScript. Also supports: DBASE import, export to Word, Excel, DBASE, HTML. Contains some ready-made templates, such as “Address book”, “Staff department”, “Photoalbum”, “Video catalog”, “MP3 list”,” Office documents”…

This program is former shareware that has recently been released as freeware. You download the shareware version, install it, and then download a key file and install that key in your registry. Unfortunately, the description of how to do this on the progam’s web page is not very clear. It just tells you to download “this file” and open it in explorer. To actually do this from the VicMan web site, right click on “the file” and use the “save as” (in Firefox, the menu item name may be different in other browsers) to save the file to your hard drive. Find the file in Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) and right click on it’s icon. One of the menu items will allow you to install the contents file in the registry.

If you need a fairly powerful database program, and don’t mind a program that requires some effort to learn to use, VicMan’s Database may meet your needs. It’s easy to try as the download is under 900K.
